Eddy Grant, pseudonimo di Edmond Montague Grant, è nato a Plaisance, Guyana, il 5 marzo 1948. Sin da giovane, emigrò con i genitori a Londra. Negli anni '60, fondò un gruppo multirazziale chiamato "The Equals", in cui ricopriva il ruolo di chitarrista e voce principale. La formazione raggiunse il successo conquistando la vetta delle classifiche britanniche con il singolo "Baby Come Back".
Dopo lo scioglimento de "The Equals", Eddy Grant intraprese la carriera da solista e nel 1982 ottenne un notevole successo raggiungendo la vetta delle classifiche con due brani: "I Don't Wanna Dance" e "Killer on the Rampage". Nel 1988, incise un altro dei suoi grandi successi, "Gimme Hope Jo'anna", un manifesto reggae contro l'apartheid.
Oltre alla sua carriera musicale, Eddy Grant è stato anche un imprenditore nell'industria musicale. Ha fondato la casa discografica "Ice Records", con sede a Barbados, diventando successivamente produttore di artisti di fama internazionale come Sting, Mick Jagger ed Elvis Costello.
