William Edward DeVaughn Jr. is an American R&B/Soul singer, songwriter, and guitarist born November 28, 1947. DeVaughn was a salaried government employee as a drawing technician. He had a great passion for music and in the early 70's he wrote a song called "A Cadillac Don't Come Easy". In 1972 he rewrote the lyrics with the new title "Be Thankful For What You Got". William spent $900 to record the song at Omega Sound studios in Philadelphia. Studio owner, engineer Joe Tarsia, recorded and mixed the track. For the recording session, guitarists Norman Harris and Bobby Eli, drummer Earl Young, vibraphonist Vince Montana and percussionist Larry Washington were called, all members of the famous group "MFSB". The disc was released in the spring of 1974 and sold nearly two million copies. In the United States, the single reached number one on the Billboard R&B Chart and number four on the Billboard Hot 100. On May 31, 1974, "Be Thankful for What You Got" was awarded a gold disc by the "RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America)". After this great success as a recording artist, DeVaughn quit his government job. William is a Jehovah's Witness and released his debut album, mainly of songs of a religious nature. His second single, "Blood Is Thicker than Water", reached number ten on the Billboard R&B Chart.
