Dame Lesley Lawson, born Lesley Hornby, is an English model, actress and singer, known by the nickname "Twiggy". Born in Neasden (London suburb) on 19 September 1949, the third daughter of the worker and printer Nellie Lydia and of the master carpenter William Norman Hornby. Lesley attended "Brondesbury" and "Kilburn High School". It was discovered at the age of sixteen by Justin de Villeneueve. The meeting took place in the hairdressing shop where Lesley worked. For Justin it was love at first sight, he started a romantic relationship and became his manager. Lesley was not very tall (1.68 cm) and had a very thin build; Justin decided to throw it under the name Twiggy (toothpick). During the 60s and 70s he obtained the covers of the most prestigious magazines, such as Vogue, Elle, Tatler, Seventeen, Interview and many others. In 1966, she was named "The Face of 1966" by the Daily Express and voted British Woman of the Year. After four years as a model, in 1970 Twiggy retired and after a few months broke the relationship with de Villeneuve. In 1971 she made her debut as an actress in Ken Russell's “The Boy Friend” and won two Golden Globe Awards. In 1973 he appeared with David Bowie on the cover of his seventh album "Pin Ups". In 1976 he signed with "Mercury Records" and released the albums "Twiggy" and "Please Get My Name Right", which featured pop and country songs. In 1977 she married actor Michael Witney. The couple had a daughter, Carly, born in 1978. In the 1980 film “The Blues Brothers” she played a girl who Elwood makes a date in a service area. In 1983, her husband Michael Witney suddenly died of a heart attack. That same year, Twiggy made her Broadway debut in the musical "My One and Only," and earned a "Tony" nomination for Best Actress in a Musical. In 1985 the single "Feel Emotion" was released; the song achieved a good European success especially in clubs. In 1988 Twiggy married actor Leigh Lawson in Sag Harbor, Long Island.
