Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) are an English electronic band formed in Wirral, Merseyside, in 1978. The group consists of founding members and main composers Andy McCluskey (vocals, bass) and Paul Humphreys (keyboards, vocals), alongside by Martin Cooper (keyboards, saxophone) and Stuart Kershaw (drums). Considered pioneers of electronic music, OMD have managed to combine an experimental and minimalist approach with a strong pop sensibility, becoming key figures in the rise of synth-pop.
McCluskey and Humphreys had previously fronted "Id", a precursor band active between 1977 and 1978, and re-recorded their song "Electricity" as OMD's debut single in 1979. The band achieved popularity across Europe in 1980 with the song "Enola Gay", written by McCluskey, which addresses the theme of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, carried out by the Enola Gay plane on 6 August 1945. The song reached eighth position in the UK Singles Chart and became a hit in throughout continental Europe, reaching first place in the charts in Italy, Portugal and Spain. With sales exceeding 5 million copies, the song has been considered one of the best songs of its era and genre. Along with 1986's "If You Leave", "Enola Gay" is recognized as one of OMD's signature songs.Album
