Herb Alpert, born Herbert Alpert, is a trumpeter, singer, composer and record producer born on March 31, 1935 in Los Angeles (California). The son of Tillie (née Goldberg) and Louis Leib Alpert, his parents were Jewish immigrants to the United States from Radomyshl (Ukraine). Alpert was born into a musical family. His father, though a tailor by trade, was also a mandolin player. His mother taught violin at a young age and his older brother, David, was a talented young drummer. Herb Alpert began taking trumpet lessons at the age of eight and began performing at various parties as a teenager. In high school, he was given one of the first wired recorders, and he began experimenting with sounds. In 1952, after graduating from Fairfax High School, he joined the US Army and performed frequently at military ceremonies. He decided to pursue a career as a musician and in 1954, while attending the "University of Southern California", he joined the band "USC Trojan Marching Band". In 1957 he collaborated with Rob Weerts as a songwriter for "Keen Records" A number of songs written or co-written by Alpert over the next two years became hits, including Jan and Dean's "Baby Talk" and Sam Cooke's "Wonderful World. In 1960, Herb Alpert embarked on a singing career at the “RCA Records" under the name of Dore Alpert. In 1962, Alpert and his new business partner Jerry Moss founded the popular record label "A&M Records". Alpert opened a small recording studio in his garage and decided to re-record the song “Twinkle Star” written by Sol Lake. During a visit to Tijuana, Mexico, Alpert happened to hear a mariachi band participating in a bullfight and decided to adapt the piece to those tunes. Alpert paid Conway Records out of his own pocket to record the single "The Lonely Bull" for radio play. His efforts were rewarded when the song entered the top ten in the fall of 1962. Following this positive debut he released his first album "The Lonely Bull" credited to Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass. The band of "The Tijuana Brass" was formed by four Italian-Americans: John Pisano (electric guitar), Lou Pagani (piano), Nick Ceroli (drums) and Pat Senatore (electric bass). In addition to Herb Alpert himself on trumpet, Tonni Kalash (trumpet) and Bob Edmondson (trombone) were also part of the band. In the 1970s and 1980s, Alpert had an extremely successful solo career. In 1979, he won a Grammy Award for his biggest instrumental hit, "Rise" (from the album of the same name). "Rise" was written by Alpert's nephew, Randy "Badazz" Alpert and his friend Andy Armer. Thanks to "Rise", Herb Alpert was the only artist ever to reach number one on the "Billboard Pop Singles" chart with both a vocal piece (This Guy's In Love With You (1968)" and an instrumental piece. The 12" version of "Rise" was one of the most used records by club DJs and the 7" single, released on July 20, 1979, reached the top of the "Billboard Hot 100" chart in October, staying there for two weeks. It entered the Top 20 in Australia and Japan and peaked at number 13 in the UK. The Long Playing "Rise" included another outstanding track: Rotation. "Rotation" did not achieve the same success but is considered a true musical masterpiece. The song was composed by Armer, Herb Alpert and Randy Alpert, the trumpet was played by Herp Albert while the voice is by Bill "Rotation" Earl. In 1983 Alpert co-produced with Sérgio Mendes the soundtrack of James's film Bond "Mai Dire Mai-Never Say Never A gain), sung by Lani Hall (wife of Herb Alpert). In 1984 he released under the name "Herb Alpert and Tijuana Brass", the album "Bullish", but in reality the "Tijuana Brass" were never involved in the making of this album. The long playing music is mainly electro-funk, with Herb Alpert's signature trumpet accompanying. The album is mainly instrumental and the only sung track, "Maniac", is performed by his wife Lani Hall. In 1987, Alpert branched out into the R&B world with the hit album "Keep Your Eye on Me." In his long musical career, Herb Alpert has won nine Grammy Awards, 14 platinum records, 15 gold records and has sold approximately 72 million records worldwide.
