George Warren McCrae Jr. is an American soul and disco singer best known for his 1974 hit "Rock Your Baby". George was the second of nine children, born on October 19, 1944 in West Palm Beach, Florida. He founded his own musical group "Jivin 'Jets" before joining the United States Navy in 1963. In that same year he married Gwen Mosley. Four years later, George reformed the group and his wife Gwen joined the lineup. A few months later, George and Gwen decided to work as a musical duo, recording for Henry Stone's "Alston" record label. Only Gwen, however, got a solo contract with the record company and George decided to be his manager as well as to sing in sessions and in the clubs of Palm Beach. George decided to go back to college to study and join law enforcement. Richard Finch and Harry Wayne Casey of the musical group “KC & The Sunshine Band” invited him and his wife Gwen to sing a song they had written. Gwen failed due to commitments to show up for the date and George recorded the song "Rock Your Baby" himself. The song suited his high-pitched voice to the point that it became one of the first hits of the disco in 1974, selling around eleven million copies worldwide. "Rock Your Baby" topped the charts in the US and UK. The song was so successful that Rolling Stone magazine voted it the number 1 song of 1974. George McCrae received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Male R&B Singer. Two other singles, "I Can't Leave You Alone" and "It's Been So Long" reached the Top 10 on the UK Singles Chart. He recorded several albums for "TK", including "George McCrae" (1975) and "Diamond Touch" (1976). He also continued to register with his wife Gwen until their divorce in 1976. The couple gave birth to two daughters: Sophia and Leah. George released other albums but his commercial popularity waned as the decade passed. I would like to point out the 1978 song "Don’t You Feel My Love" which, thanks to the remix 12 "from 1979, became a real filler in all dance clubs. He married for the second time, moved to Canada and entered a period of semi-retirement, leaving "TK" in the late 1970s. With his second wife, he had another daughter, Jennifer McCray. George continues to perform live and in December 2017 he performed on the BBC show "Hootenanny" with Jools Holland.
