"Cyndi Lauper", pen name of Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper, is an American singer born in Brooklyn, New York on June 22, 1953. Daughter of Fred Lauper (of German and Swiss descent) and Catrine Dominique Gallo, (of Italian descent), Cyndi has two siblings: Fred and Ellen. Raised in the Ozone Park neighborhood of Queens, she began playing guitar and writing songs at age 12. He attended "Richmond Hill High School" and in the early 1970s began performing with various "cover bands". On October 14, 1983, Cyndi Lauper released her first solo album, "She's So Unusual". The album achieved worldwide success, peaking at number four in the US and reaching the top five in eight other countries. Included on the album were the hit singles "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", "Time After Time" and "She Bop". Cyndi won the award for Best New Artist at the 1985 Grammy Awards and with “She's So Unusual” received various nominations including: “Album of the Year”, “Record of the Year”, “Best Female Performance Vocal Pop” (for " Girls Just Want to Have Fun") and "Song of the Year" (for "Time After Time"). The video for "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" won the inaugural award for Best Female Video at the 1984 MTV Video Music Awards. In 1985, she participated in the USA for Africa charity project, singing on "We Are the World" which it sold more than 20 million copies. In 1985 she released the single "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough", from the soundtrack of the film "The Goonies" and reached the tenth position of the "Billboard Hot 100". In 1986, Cyndi released her second album, "True Colors" and received two nominations at the "Grammy Awards" for "Best Female Rock Vocal Performance" and "Best Music Video". In 1988 she made his film debut in the comedy film "Vibes", alongside Jeff Goldblum, Peter Falk and Julian Sands. “A Night to Remember“, the third album by Cyndi Lauper was released in the spring of 1989. The single “I Drove All Night” (cover by Roy Orbison) reached the sixth position and Cyndi obtained yet another nomination at the “Grammy Awards” for “Best Female Rock Vocal Performance”. Thanks to her friendship with Yoko Ono, Cyndi took part in the May 1990 "John Lennon" tribute concert in Liverpool, and sang the Beatles song "Hey Bulldog" and John Lennon's song "Working Class Hero". On November 24, 1991, Cyndi Lauper married actor David Thornton. The fourth album "Hat Full of Stars", was released in June 1993 and was unfortunately a commercial failure reaching only the position n.112 in the charts. On November 19, 1997, Cyndi gave birth to her son, Declyn Wallace Lauper Thornton. Since 1983, Cyndi Lauper has released fourteen studio albums and has participated in many other projects. In 2010, "Memphis Blues" became Billboard's most successful blues album of the year, remaining at number one on the "Billboard Blues Albums" chart for 13 consecutive weeks. In 2013, Cyndi won the Tony Award for Best Original Score for composing the Broadway musical Kinky Boots, making her the first woman to win the category on her own. The musical was awarded five more Tonys, including the “Tony Award for Best New Musical”. In 2014, Cyndi Lauper received the "Grammy Award" for Best Musical Theater Album for Cast Recording. In 2016, the West End production won 'Best New Musical' at the 'Olivier Awards'.
