"Bronski Beat" is a British synthpop band
formed in 1983 in London, England. The band consisted of Jimmy Somerville
(vocals), born in Glasgow on 22 June 1961, Steve Bronski (keyboards,
percussion), born in Glasgow on 7 February 1969, and Larry Steinbachek
(keyboards, percussion), born in Southend (Essex) on May 6, 1960. Simon Davolls
contributed backing vocals on many of their songs.
In 1983, the three friends shared a three-bedroom flat in
Lancaster House in Brixton, London. From this coexistence the idea of forming
a band was born, and after various public performances they attracted the
attention of important record agents.
In 1984 they signed a recording contract with London
Records and their debut single, "Smalltown Boy", achieved great
success in Europe. The single reached number three in the UK Singles Chart and
number one in Italy, Belgium and Holland. The follow-up single,
"Why", reached number six in the UK and entered the Top 10 in France,
Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Holland and Australia. At the end of 1984, the
album "The Age Of Consent" was released, which reached number four in
the best-selling albums chart in the UK.
In 1985, singer Marc Almond joined the band to record the
song "I Feel Love", a medley that contained some famous Donna Summer
songs. Also in 1985, Jimmy Somerville left the band to form the group "The
Communards" with Richard Coles, and was replaced by John Foster. The new
single, "Hit That Perfect Beat", reached number three in the UK
Singles Chart. In 1987, Foster left the band, only to return in 1994. In 1989,
the band's lead singer became Jonathan Hellyer, with Annie Conway as backing
vocalist.
Larry Steinbachek died on December 16, 2016, at the age
of 56, after a battle with cancer.
Steve Bronski died on 7 December 2021, aged 61, in a fire
in central London.
