"Black", pseudonym of Colin Vearncombe was a British singer born in Liverpool on May 26, 1962. He attended the "Prescot Grammar School" and later enrolled in an art foundation course at "Liverpool Polytechnic". A big fan of Elvis Presley, Colin was inspired by him to become a singer. Colin Vearncombe decided to call himself "Black" because he thought his surname would be difficult to remember. His first publication dates back to the single "Human Features" released on the "Rox Records" label in 1981. At that time, the musical group "Black" also consisted of Dane Goulding on bass and schoolmate Greg Leyland on drums. The single was followed in 1982 by the song "More Than the Sun". On that occasion he made friends with Dave "Dix" Dickie of "Last Chant" and they signed the contract with "WEA Records". In 1982, "Black" played with the "Thompson Twins" on their "Quick Step and Side Kick" tour and also supported the "Wah!" on a UK tour. In 1985, “Black” went through a very difficult period: a couple of car accidents, he discovered that his mother was seriously ill, he was abandoned by the record company, his first marriage fell apart and he was left homeless. It was in this dramatic period of his life that he wrote the lyrics of the song "Wonderful Life". The song reached top positions across Europe and was subsequently sung by Kim Wilde, Tony Hadley and Katie Melua. In 1999, after a long break, the artist recorded some records with his real name. On January 10, 2016, Colin Vearncombe was involved in a car accident near Cork Airport, Ireland, where he had been residing for several years, and placed in an induced coma due to severe brain injuries. Vearncombe subsequently died in the intensive care unit of Cork University Hospital on 26 January 2016 aged 53. He left behind his wife Camilla Griehsel (Swedish opera singer) and three sons.
